    http://www.mirabal.com/
Two-time GRAMMY winner, Robert Mirabal, lives with his family at the foot of sacred Taos Mountain in northern New Mexico.
Maintaining a traditional life, keeping the centuries-old customs of the Taos Pueblo people, Robert has been described as a Native American "Renaissance man" - musician, composer, painter, master craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer - and travels extensively playing his music all over the world.

If you live a traditional life you see things differently-spiritually and musically.

His first flute came when he was 18 with money he borrowed from his grand mother, and shortly afterwards he had the opportunity to meet Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai who greatly influenced him.
When we met he looked at my hands and laughed. He said, I have that same scar. It's the scar of the flute maker.
In the years since, Robert has continued the evolution of his flute making and has also become a concert performer and recording artist. His dozen albums of traditional music, rock and roll, and spoken word present a contemporary view of American Indian life that is unequaled.

My music is informed by the ceremonial music that I've heard all my life. What I create comes out of my body and soul in a desire to take care of the spirits of the earth.

A leading proponent of world music, Robert has merged his indigenous American sound with those of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies categorization.

My travels have provided me with experiences that I could have never imagined, and exposed me to a global sound and a global voice.

Whether as a composer, songwriter or musician, Robert has won many honors including two-time Native American Artist of the Year, three-time Songwriter of the Year, a 2006 GRAMMY Award for Sacred Ground, and his 2008 GRAMMY for Johnny Whitehorse Totemic Flute Chants, blending all of Robert's influences into a musical landscape that conjures up both the historic and contemporary West.

His 2002 breakthrough PBS Special, Music From a Painted Cave is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression.

Robert Mirabal, has been one of the leaders of the Native Flute renaissance. Mirabal's style is more "traditional" and less commercial than many of his contemporaries, building his melodies on the rituals that have surrounded him all of his life at Taos Pueblo, where he was born and still resides. "My culture doesn't allow me to record anything traditional," Mirabal said by phone from the home he shares with his partner Dawn and their nine month old daughter. "What I create comes out of my body and soul, in a desire to take care of the spirits of the earth." (j.poet, music editor for Indian Artist Magazine)

Where “The Catcher in the Rye” meets “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.” Reyes Wind has faith in the power of memory… and in her journey of self-discovery. A contemporary tale juxtaposed with historical, first-hand accounts of Indian life found only in memory— and snapshots— "Running Alone in Photographs" is the coming-of-age story of a young Native American musician who travels the world before returning to her ancestral home. This love story of an individual’s struggle between her tribal role and the modern world, and the courage and grace required to live fully in each, is the most intimate glimpse of contemporary American Indian life you will find today. Mirabal has storytelling in his DNA…

Robert Mirabel will be appearing at the Morrison Town Hall, built in 1896 by the Woodman of the World, this is an intimate venue, enhancing the magic and spirit of Mirabel's music and talents.
This event is sponsored by Collage, a place for creative expression and healing.

Rocky's Mountain Books - an accidental business!

Rocky’s Mountain Books was not meant to be a long-term business. It was not meant to be the subject of blogs and facebook updates and endless trips to the Post Office. But here I am. So what happened and how did I end up here, blogging about my business?

In a perfect world, the best advice for starting any business is “Do What You Love” or “Follow Your Bliss”. You can’t sell it and work it if you don’t have a certain passion for it, whatever ”it” is. In MY perfect world I needed to lighten my load. I had hundreds of books in my own library and realized, reluctantly, that I had to let some of them find a new home with someone who would love them as I had.

My daughter, Kate, is also an avid reader, and when she left the nest and moved to Boston to pursue her life, she left behind a large selection of novels, classics and textbooks. “Sell them on Amazon, Mom. I don’t want to move them”.

At some point, as I got down to the minutiae of listing inventory, reviewing condition and pricing books, I realized I was hooked. Books? Give me the Book Section of the Sunday NY Times and my favorite perch on the sofa. Let me loose in Barnes and Noble. My passion for books transcended the connection to business and commerce but actually served the business! I was having fun! I stumbled upon the secret (for me) and it was mostly due to my daughter’s advice, “Sell them on amazon”.

“If one advances confidently in the direction of one's dreams, and endeavors to live the life which one has imagined, one will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Thoreau’s quote always had special meaning for me. To me it meant that there was something out there for me that was uniquely mine. But years of “searching” for it hadn’t worked. It just may be that the direction of your dreams is NOT what you thought. Maybe you need to let it find YOU. Books are my passion. Every step that I take is wrapped in that passion, and I don't know that it would've happened that way otherwise.

Rocky’s has not nearly begun to do all it wants to do. Sometimes I feel it’s an entity in control of me, leading me from one step to the next. Of all my endeavors, Rocky’s has the most life, the most of me. I’ve found a voice. It’s just a start, but the universe has been good to me in pursuing this dream. I’ll take that as a “yes”.

I've gotten to know Terry (Rocky's Mountain Books) through Facebook. Her posts and comments were always witty and intelligent and I was impressed with the condition of the books I was buying from Rocky's Mountain Books. Her blog showcases her passion for the written word and her talents as a writer. My favorite part of her blog is "The Coffee Stained Books". There are some books that I re-read often and over the years the pages have become coffee stained, which makes the books even more endearing. Terry's other passion is also reflected in her blog and her posts, she does foster care for dogs waiting for homes.

Hay Bales & Horses Tales!

Don’t miss the Early Bird Discounted tickets for the 2010 Hay Bales & Horse Tales!
You’ll have the opportunity to meet Kate Chenery Tweedy, author of Secretariat’s Meadow at Hay Bales & Horse Tales on October 30! Kate is the daughter of Penny Chenery, the owner of Secretariat when he won the Triple Crown. As a young adult in 1973, Kate was in a box at the Belmont with her family when Secretariat demolished the field at the Belmont Stakes to capture the Triple Crown. It was a year to remember, and she’ll be at Colorado Horsecare Foodbank’s gala event on October 30, sharing her story and signing books. Her book tells the story of her remarkable grandfather and mother and their tenure at that timeless place, The Meadow. Disney tells the story of Secretariat and the Chenery family in the movie Secretariat in theaters now. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to meet Kate!

We’ll have a fabulous dinner and nationally-known country music performers Jon Chandler and Pete Martinez will have everyone dancing! We’re adding to our silent auction everyday, so check out the latest goodies.

All this in support of the great cause of keeping Colorado horses and their owners together! See you there! Register online today!

Beyond Deb's K-9 Kookies

One adopted dog, one new business, and one new passion.
Deb of Deb's K-9 Kookies is active in the Evergreen Animal Protection League. She not only works behind the scenes to help with the organization of fundraisers, she's at the front table at the Octoberpets and the Big Chili Cook-Off.

Deb's dog brought a new business and a new passion into Deb's life. Her new pet was diagnosed with diabetes. Deb began to research 'doggie' nutrition and soon developed dog biscuits and treats. Everyone's dogs loved them and local pet stores approached her about producing them for their shops. Seasonally Yours in the Heart of Evergreen, Colorado

Seasonally Yours is a colorful shop that changes with the seasons The store is decorated in rich shades of gold, orange and red. This little shop, on Main Street, in the Heart of Evergreen is ready for Halloween, offering pumpkins, witches and other wonderfully frightful glasses hats and decorations. Janice had selects the merchandise which is fun, funky and colorful. Seasonally Yours unique gift items may change with the seasons, but one thing that never changes is their quality.

Janice worked within the floral industry in product development, marketing and merchandising. When a tiny shop space became available on Main Street she decided to make a dream a reality. Janice resigned from her corporate position and became a successful entrepreneur. It was a true leap of faith based on a sound business background.

Over the past five years, she has developed an ever-changing business and marketing plan. Seasonally Yours quickly out grew it’s tiny space, and when the opportunity presented itself for expansion Janice again choose to expand during the worst economic times since the great depression. Janice listened to her customers and added made to order Salt Water Taffy and home made fresh Fudge. Both the Taffy and Fudge flavors change with the seasons. Customer favorites available now include Pumpkin Praline, Grave Yard Mud and Gooey Cluster fudge. Taffy flavor favorites include of Pumpkin, Molasses and Maple. This made in Evergreen fudge can be shipped just about anywhere.

The shop was in need of an identity worthy of the fudge and taffy’s popularity. Fudgley, named by one of Janice’s younger customers, was born in the spring of this year. Fudgley is a whimsical ant with high top tennies and denim overalls. Fudgley can be found dancing about on the website www.seasonally-yours.com and on You Tube. Fudgley likes attention and now he wants his own Fanpage on Facebook.

The Cafe @ The Place

The Cafe @ The Place is a refreshing change, the basic menu has a gourmet flair to the sandwiches with the addition of homemade chutney and very fresh breads and salads. Val, who is from Australia, has brought the British touch to everything. The staff has collaborated to create amazing pastries and desserts. You must try the fig pudding in caramel sauce! The quiches are dense, smooth, and creamy, served with a side salad or fresh fruit for $5.75. (which I devoured before realizing I should have taken a pic of it). Breakfast entrees are under $5.00 and are not your usual fare, and include a Frittata and Tuscany Sandwich (egg, feta, sun dried tomatoes, pesto with bacon, sausage or veggie on an English muffin). The basil pesto is made from fresh herbs and is also used on the Pesto Pepperoni Pizza ($3.95).
I (gluten intolerant) was able to resist the frosted cinnamon rolls, but could not resist the little scones with whipped butter, which makes them really "to die for." The scones brought back memories of one of Evergreen's favorite breakfast and lunch places, the British Invasion. The Cafe has the same standard and quality of food.
The Cafe @ The Place is located at 27885 Meadow Drive, Evergreen, Colorado 80439
They are open Monday thru Friday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

The People - The Place - The Cafe

This is Evergreen's best kept secret. The Cafe @ The Place, by the EAPL Thrift Store. The interior is fresh and comfortable, you want to have a cup of coffee from their extensive coffee menu and chat with friends. FREE WIFI!

A Gluten-Free Tour with Johnny

Johnny is one of the people in my life that I see at least twice week. We exchange "hi, how are you", "beautiful day," etc. Johnny is always in the natural foods section at the King Soopers in Bergen Park (Evergreen, Colorado). Saturday Johnny was in the lobby with exactly what I needed. Recently I discovered I was gluten intolerant. I love breads, pastries, cereals, pancakes and crepes. I bake muffins every weekend, I have a sandwich for lunch everyday, and toast before bed. The first few days after learning I was gluten intolerant I discovered that most of the foods in my cupboard and frig contained gluten.
Johnny is a nutritionist and knew every item in the store that did not contain gluten. As he took me down each aisle he also pointed out foods that contain gluten, like soups, spaghetti sauces, and even some yogurts. In a short walk through King Soopers I learned so much about what to eat and general nutrition. I bought most of his suggested food items and he was right they are good.
Johnny has an extensive knowledge of healthy foods and vitamins and continues to take classes. He moved to Colorado from L.A. and is married to a chef. They met a few years ago and realized they had gone to Junior High together. (I love those kind of stories)
If you have a question ask Johnny, he's one of our mountain gems!

Murder Evergreen Style

Dark clouds hang just above the mountain tops, casting eerie shadows on the changing Aspens. It is a cold autumn evening in Evergreen. Bare tree branches scratch against the side of my cottage. I sink into my favorite chair and absorb the warmth of the fire. I reach for a good book, String the Dark Pearl by Kristin K. Witt. I have read it once, unable to put it down, cursing the author for capturing my attention and creating a murder mystery, that I the expert at solving a murder in less than three chapters could not solve. Do I dare read this book again! It is well crafted and intelligent, it holds my interest, but - I begin thinking about the woman who wrote this book. Kristin Witt writes for the Mountain Connection, she publishes a blog titled Speaking of Cake
(http://www.kristinkwitt.blogspot.com/) that is funny, beautiful and touches the heart. I have heard Kristin speak at various events, fundraisers, and women's groups. Her topics and her humor are filled with grace and I leave the events wanting to be nicer and kinder. Kristin worked to make this year's Big Chili Cook Off the largest in its history. This is a woman who is well respected in the community for a 'can do" attitude, and creating positive results, always with the greatest diplomacy and respectfulness. So, how could she possibly write a book like String the Dark Pearl? The sunset adds a golden outline to the tops of the dark clouds and the wind picks up, banging the gate against the fence.
